Survivors of human trafficking and torture have diverse medical issues, many of which have never been previously addressed. They suffer from pre-existing medical conditions ranging from hypertension to asthma to infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and malaria. They also suffer physical problems that are a direct result of the trauma they suffered; these can include headaches, musculoskeletal injuries, gastrointestinal complaints, genitourinary problems such as sexually transmitted diseases and physical injury, dental problems, and hearing and visual loss.
In addition to the above issues, many survivors suffer from somatic manifestations of post-traumatic stress disorder, including diffuse pain, insomnia, nightmares and flashbacks, as well as depression and severe anxiety.
Difficulty with language, unfamiliarity with the health care system, mistrust of authorities and cost are all barriers to survivors accessing adequate and appropriate care.
Clinical Care
All Pacific Survivor Center patients are evaluated by a primary care physician for a comprehensive assessment of health care needs. Lab testing, imaging and medications are provided free or at reduced cost through community health clinic partners. Specialty referrals, such as dentists, opthalmologists, cardiologists, and orthopedic surgeons are available through our referral network within the community.
Mental Health
Patients who have been victims of human trafficking or torture are at high risk of developing emotional, cognitive, and psychosocial sequelae of these severely traumatic experiences. The goal of mental health care is to address these needs and empower patients to regain their sense of identity, security and hope.
Mental health services include both individual psychiatric and psychological care, as well as group and art therapy. Treatment is culturally appropriate and tailored to the needs and backgrounds of patients. In addition, as part of their recovery process, patients are encouraged to become support systems for new arrivals, sharing their experiences with other patients and helping them adjust to their new lives.
Forensic Examinations
Medical and psychiatric forensic examinations are provided as needed for both immigrant and domestic patients.
